During your period (days 1 to 5), estrogen and progesterone are both low while inflammatory hormones run high, and your gut tends to speed up, sometimes uncomfortably. The follicular phase (days 6 to 13) brings rising estrogen, better gut movement, more energy, and usually a smaller appetite. This is usually the most comfortable gut window, and some research finds gut bacteria variety peaking here. Around ovulation (day 14), estrogen peaks then drops sharply, and some people notice a brief mid-cycle digestive shift. Through the luteal phase (days 15 to 28), rising progesterone slows your gut and raises constipation risk, water retention adds to the feeling of bloating, and appetite goes up along with cravings for carb-heavy foods.
Tracking your gut symptoms alongside your cycle for two to three months reveals your own pattern and makes managing it far more effective than just reacting after the fact. Cycle-aware management gets ahead of it rather than responding, slightly cutting back on gassy carbs in the luteal phase, once progesterone has already slowed things down, prevents the extra bloating that combination causes in sensitive people.

After two months of consistent logging, you'll have a personal gut-and-cycle map more accurate to your own body than any general advice could be. Use it to make phase-specific adjustments, more fiber and water in the late follicular phase before progesterone kicks in, an anti-inflammatory focus during your period, and maybe less gassy carbs in the late luteal phase if bloating consistently peaks there.
