Endurance training puts specific, real demands on your gut that casual exercise doesn't. Marathon training, triathlon prep, long-distance cycling, and ultramarathon running all stress your gut in ways shorter, easier exercise simply doesn't, and dealing with these demands takes specific knowledge.

How permeable your gut gets rises with how hard and how long you exercise. Moderate exercise causes little change in trained athletes, but high-intensity exercise, roughly above 70 to 80% of your max effort, consistently increases permeability, with the effect growing the longer you go. A few nutrition strategies matter specifically for endurance athletes. Training your gut to handle race-day nutrition, using your actual race-day products in training, cuts down the extra stress that causes a lot of competition-day gut problems. And the most common gut health mistake among endurance athletes is not eating enough during heavy training, since too little total energy starves the bacteria of what they need to function.

Plan your gut nutrition alongside your training. During base training, maximize fiber variety and fermented food to build your gut bacteria up. During peak training, hold your fiber steady but focus on timing around sessions, hydration, and eating enough overall. During taper, keep your diet varied while easing off training-day gut stress. Race week means tested race nutrition only, no experiments. And after the event, prioritize immediate recovery with fluids, easy whole food carbs, and a probiotic to help with the disruption race-day intensity causes.
