A 2025 genetic study using data from over 386,000 people used a method that can help separate cause from effect, and found small but real links running both ways: certain gut bacteria appear to influence insomnia risk, and insomnia itself appears to shift gut bacteria. Neither effect was huge on its own, but the fact that a genetics-based method, which sidesteps the usual chicken-and-egg problem, found a real signal in both directions makes this meaningfully stronger evidence than earlier studies that just showed correlation.

The chemistry connecting them

Gut bacteria make compounds from tryptophan and other amino acids that feed directly into your body's melatonin and serotonin production, both central to sleep. Animal research has shown specific bacterial compounds can directly boost melatonin production and extend sleep. That gives the link an actual mechanism, rather than just being two things that happen to move together.

What's being tested as treatment

Early clinical trials are testing specific probiotic strains for sleep, with at least one 2023 trial finding a specific Bifidobacterium strain improved sleep by affecting the body's stress hormone system. This is still an early, developing area, not an established treatment, and no probiotic is currently approved specifically for insomnia. Interestingly, one 2025 study also found that a common prescription sleep medication itself changes gut bacteria during treatment, showing this relationship runs through medication too, not just diet.
