Treat oral hygiene as a gut health habit, not a separate box
Brushing twice daily, flossing, and keeping up with dental checkups measurably reduce the population of oral bacteria most linked to problematic gut migration. Given how directly oral bacteria transfer into your digestive tract, this isn't a stretch, it's one of the more evidence-backed habits on this site that happens to sit in the bathroom cabinet rather than the kitchen.
If you have reflux, this matters more
Acid reflux gives oral bacteria an easier path down into the gut, so if you deal with reflux regularly, oral hygiene is doing double duty for you. It's worth treating as part of your reflux management, not an unrelated habit running alongside it.
If you're managing a gut condition, mention your gum health to your doctor
If you have diagnosed gum disease and you're also managing a gut condition like IBD or IBS, mention the gum disease to your gastroenterologist. The connection between periodontitis and inflammatory gut conditions is increasingly treated as clinically relevant, not a coincidence to shrug off.
Haven't seen a dentist in a while? That's a gut health question now too
If you have gum disease, or you simply haven't had a checkup in a while, addressing that is a reasonable, evidence-backed piece of your overall gut health picture. It's not only a dental concern in isolation anymore.
The habits that help your gut tend to help your mouth too
The fundamentals covered throughout this series, fiber diversity and fermented foods that support butyrate production, plausibly support oral tissue health as well. It's one more reason the same basic habits keep showing up as useful across parts of the body that seem unrelated at first glance.
