Animal research has found that blueberry compounds specifically help restore your colon's protective mucus layer and increase the cells that produce it. Separate research has found blueberry-derived compounds boosting a bacterial species strongly linked to a healthy gut lining.

A trial introducing blueberry powder as an early food to breastfed babies found real changes in their gut bacteria and its variety, though this is a very different context from how adults would use it.
Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh for gut health, since the beneficial compounds hold up well through freezing, making this an easy, affordable, year-round habit.
