We tend to treat anemia as a simple "eat more iron" problem, but for a lot of Filipino women, the more relevant barrier is how much of that dietary iron the gut manages to absorb, not how much iron sits on the plate to begin with. The encouraging part first: anemia among Filipino women of reproductive age has fallen substantially over the past two decades.
Why pregnancy still carries meaningfully higher risk

A national nutrition survey found that meat and fish, the best absorbed iron sources, make up only a small share of the typical Filipino diet, roughly 7 to 12 percent of total daily intake, while about 70 percent comes from plant sources like rice and corn.[3] Plant-based iron absorbs less efficiently than the iron in meat and fish to begin with, and phytates, compounds naturally present in rice and grains, further inhibit that absorption. What improves how much iron your gut takes up

Vitamin C consumed in the same meal as a plant iron source substantially improves absorption, converting iron into a form the intestine takes up more readily.
