Nearly every collagen supplement says "hydrolyzed" or "peptides" somewhere on the label. Whole collagen and hydrolyzed collagen peptides behave in real, meaningfully different ways once they reach your gut, even though they start from the same source, a distinction covered in more detail in our piece on collagen, gelatin, and gut lining support.
It comes down to size
Native collagen is a long, tightly wound triple-helix protein, too large and structurally complex for your digestive enzymes to fully break down in one pass. Hydrolysis treats that protein with water and enzymes before it ever reaches you, cutting it into short peptide fragments a fraction of the size, small enough to cross the intestinal wall directly.[1]
What reaches your bloodstream
Research tracking specific collagen-derived peptides, one called Pro-Hyp in particular, found they survive digestion intact and show up in the bloodstream measurably faster and in higher amounts than the free amino acids that make up whole, undigested collagen.[2] That absorption speed is the real mechanism behind why hydrolyzed forms outperform whole collagen for reaching tissue.
What happens to the peptides that don't get absorbed
Whatever doesn't get absorbed intact doesn't necessarily go to waste. A study modeling full digestion of collagen hydrolysates found the peptides that escape absorption in the small intestine reach the colon and get fermented by gut bacteria there, producing short-chain fatty acids in the process, the same compounds covered throughout this content as central to gut lining health.[3] Collagen hydrolysate may end up doing double duty, functioning partly as a prebiotic once it reaches your colon, not just as a supplement absorbed earlier on.

Bone broth and other whole-food collagen sources still contain the large, unhydrolyzed protein structure, so your own digestive enzymes have to do the breakdown work a supplement has already done for you. That doesn't make whole-food sources useless. Your gut can and does break down collagen from food, just less completely and less predictably than a pre-hydrolyzed supplement, and usually in smaller total amounts per serving than a measured supplement dose.
What to do with this
If you want a specific, measurable amount of collagen-derived peptides reaching your bloodstream, hydrolyzed supplements have a clearer, better-documented path to get there. If your goal is simpler, just including collagen-rich foods as part of a varied diet, bone broth, bulalo, or similar sources are still a reasonable choice, just less precisely dosed and slower to break down.
