Psyllium husk comes from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant and is one of the most studied fiber supplements available. Unlike many fermentable fibers, most of it passes through the large intestine largely intact, holding water and forming a gel rather than being broken down quickly by bacteria. That structural difference shapes how it behaves in the gut.
What psyllium does mechanically
It absorbs water and swells into a gel, adding bulk and softness to stool, which is why it works for both constipation and, at controlled doses, loose stool. Because it resists rapid fermentation, it tends to produce less gas and bloating than highly fermentable fibers like inulin.Despite being only partly fermentable, psyllium does measurably shift gut bacteria. A randomized, placebo-controlled study found measurable increases in three genera known for producing butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that feeds colon cells and supports gut barrier function: Lachnospira, Roseburia, and Faecalibacterium.[1] Separately, research presented at a gastroenterology meeting found psyllium reduced markers of intestinal inflammation and improved bowel regularity in people with irritable bowel syndrome.
What to do with this
A starting dose of one teaspoon of psyllium husk in a full glass of water, once daily, is a reasonable entry point. Work up to one to two tablespoons a day if needed and well tolerated. Because psyllium is only partly fermented, it's a sensible fiber choice for people who get bloated on more fermentable options like inulin or chicory root, while still supporting butyrate-producing bacteria over time.
