Whether it's better to eat three larger meals or six smaller ones is an old debate, and a 2025 study, nicknamed FRESH, gave it a more precise answer than most advice columns do. Fifty healthy adults ate identical total food amounts for 21 days on each pattern, three meals or six smaller ones, in randomized order, while researchers tracked appetite hormones directly through hourly blood draws, a different lever on hunger signaling than chewing speed, which shapes the same hormones from the other end of a meal.

Ghrelin is the hormone that signals hunger, and PYY signals fullness after eating. On the three-meal pattern, both hormones moved in clear, well-defined waves that matched when people ate.[1] On the six-meal pattern, that signal flattened out considerably, and the effect was more pronounced in participants with higher body fat, whose hunger and fullness signals were already somewhat dulled to begin with.

Three larger meals: Produces clearer internal hunger and fullness cues, which may help some people better recognize when they've truly had enough.
Six smaller meals: Blunts hunger and fullness signals; useful for people managing blood sugar swings or certain digestive conditions, less useful for learning to read your own appetite.
No weight or metabolic-rate data: This particular study measured hormones and subjective hunger, not weight change, so it doesn't settle which pattern is better for weight management specifically, a question meal replacement shakes research runs into as well.

What to do with this

If you've struggled to tell the difference between true hunger and habitual snacking, this data points to a clear fix. Shifting toward three defined meals, rather than grazing throughout the day, gives your body a clearer hormonal signal to work with. If breakfast is the meal you're most tempted to cut, it helps to know the trade-offs there first, see skipping breakfast and your gut. That doesn't make frequent smaller meals wrong for everyone; people managing reactive hypoglycemia, some GI conditions, or high training volumes often need more frequent intake for other reasons. If your goal is simply learning to recognize hunger and fullness more clearly, three meals with real gaps between them is the pattern this study's hormone data supports.
