Meditation and your gut: what the Tibetan monk study found

One of the more interesting studies in gut microbiome research didn't happen in a lab. It happened by comparing the stool samples of Tibetan Buddhist monks who had meditated for years against their secular neighbors living in the same region, eating similar food.

The study and what it found

Researchers performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing on fecal samples from 56 people total: Tibetan Buddhist monks who had practiced long-term deep meditation and neighboring secular residents living in the same area.[1] The monks' gut bacteria differed substantially from their neighbors', and the bacterial genera enriched in the monks were specifically ones associated with reduced risk of anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular disease, along with enhanced immune function.

Why the comparison group matters here

Because the monks and secular residents lived in the same general region, this design controls for some of the geographic and dietary variation that usually complicates gut bacteria research. The remaining major difference between the groups was the sustained meditation practice itself, which is part of why researchers describe this as a useful, if still limited, way to isolate meditation's specific association with gut bacteria composition.

A separate meditation study found the same direction of change

A non-randomized trial studying Isha yoga practices, a vegan diet, and participation in an intensive meditation retreat found that meditators showed enrichment of beneficial bacterial genera, specifically Bifidobacterium, Roseburia, and Subdoligranulum, compared to non-meditators.[2] The same research group had previously found advanced meditation practice improved anxiety and depression symptoms, reduced blood markers of inflammation, and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein tied to brain health, giving this finding real company across several related outcomes rather than standing alone.

The likely mechanism connecting the two

Researchers propose the connection runs through stress and cortisol. Meditation is well established to lower anxiety and stress reactivity, and reduced stress is understood to change circulating cortisol levels, which in turn can influence gut bacteria composition through the gut-brain axis, the two-way communication system linking your digestive tract and nervous system.[3] This gut-brain axis operates through the immune system, hormonal signaling, and the vagus nerve, the main pathway of your parasympathetic, or "rest and digest," nervous system.

Where the research still has real limits

Comparative study

The research here is early-stage, not settled science, and the coming large-cohort trial is what would move it closer to one.

What this means for a regular meditation practice

The current evidence doesn't tell you that a 10-minute daily meditation habit will reshape your gut bacteria the way years of monastic practice appears to. It does give real, mechanistically plausible support to the idea that consistent stress reduction through meditation is a real gut health lever, working through the same cortisol and gut-brain axis pathways implicated across this research, even if the scale of benefit at a casual practice level remains an open question.
