Why one hard workout stresses your gut in the first place
During intense exercise, your body redirects blood away from your digestive tract and toward the muscles doing the work. That drop in gut blood flow, called splanchnic hypoperfusion, loosens the tight junctions between the cells lining your intestine, letting the gut turn measurably more permeable for a stretch[1]. Building a gut-smart deload into your plan
Most training experts recommend a deload roughly every four to eight weeks, sooner if you're newer to hard training or eating in a calorie deficit, later if you're more experienced.

Start tonight with something small: add a spoonful of a fermented food, yogurt, kimchi, or kefir, to a meal you're already eating. During the deload week itself, rotate in two or three plant foods you don't normally eat and protect an extra hour of sleep each night.
