Researchers took gut bacteria from a woman with obesity before and after she completed an 8-week, medically supervised very-low-calorie diet, roughly 800 calories a day, and transplanted each version into separate groups of germ-free mice.
Mice that received the post-restriction bacteria showed a decreased abundance of two obesity-associated species, Clostridium ramosum and Hungatella hathewayi, and an increase in Monoglobus pectinilyticus, a specialist at breaking down plant fiber.[1] These mice also showed reduced levels of certain "memory" immune cells associated with aging, along with better glucose tolerance and less body fat than mice given the pre-restriction bacteria.
This was a mouse transplant study built on one human donor's before-and-after microbiome, so the results describe a plausible mechanism, not a guarantee that sustained smaller portions will produce identical effects in every person. It does add specific, mechanistic weight to the general observation that sustained calorie restriction changes gut bacteria composition, not just body weight.
