A newer category of at-home test promises to calculate your "gut age," a single number meant to represent how old your intestines act biologically, apart from your birth certificate. The idea borrows from real aging research, but the consumer products selling it and the science behind that research are not quite the same thing.
What the research shows
Peer-reviewed researchers have built gut aging models that combine blood chemistry with bacterial species counts. A 2026 study of 637 adults ages 18 to 99 combined seven blood markers with 45 gut bacterial species in a neural-network model, predicting biological age with an average error of roughly six years. A University of Maryland study sent identical stool samples, drawn from one standardized reference material, to seven commercial gut-testing companies. The companies reported markedly different bacterial compositions from the same exact sample.[2]That second finding is the more telling one. The variation between competing companies testing the identical sample matched the biological variation typically seen between different people entirely. That means two consumer kits could hand the same person two different "gut ages" from the same day's sample.[2]
What to do with this
Treat a gut-age number from a consumer kit as entertainment rather than a health verdict, especially given that the seven-company reproducibility study found results diverging by roughly the same margin as testing seven different people. A published, peer-reviewed biological-age model needs both blood work and 45 tracked bacterial species to land within about six years of your real age. Even that combined approach is still being validated in larger, more diverse groups, so a single stool test claiming a precise "gut age" is working with far less behind it.
