Forty nearly identical bottles on one shelf, and somehow you're supposed to pick the right one in the next five minutes. Most of what separates them is marketing, not meaningful difference. Genus, species, strain: what the name tells you
Most research proving a probiotic works, shortening a cold, easing diarrhea, gets done on one exact strain, not a whole species[1]. A label listing only the genus, with no strain code attached, can't tell you whether you're getting the studied strain or an unstudied relative that just shares its last name, and this is the single biggest thing separating a bottle backed by research from one riding on a familiar name.
"Only specific strains of bacteria or yeast have proof of efficacy. This efficacy is specific for only some strains or mixtures of strains," says Dr. Lynne McFarland, Research Health Scientist, VA Puget Sound Health Care System[2].
Match it to what you want it to do
Three common goals cover most of what people are shopping for, and the right pick depends on which one is yours.
Coming off antibiotics: look for Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or Saccharomyces boulardii, the yeast-based option covered in more depth in Saccharomyces boulardii: the yeast-based probiotic that's different from bacteria. Both have randomized trial data showing they cut antibiotic-related diarrhea[3,4].
Managing IBS: look for a strain with real IBS trials behind it, not a generic "gut health" label. What helps one condition rarely transfers to another[5].
Everyday maintenance: a well-studied strain still helps, but you don't need to chase a specific code here. A food source works too, and usually costs less.
Check that potency is guaranteed through the expiry date
Probiotics are living organisms, and living things die off in a bottle the same way they would anywhere else. Testing on stored products has found counts well below what the label promised, sometimes by the time you'd be taking them[6]. A count listed only "at time of manufacture" tells you nothing about what survives by the time the bottle reaches your shelf. The pricier bottle isn't automatically the better one
A twelve-dollar bottle with the right strain and a real expiry guarantee beats a forty-dollar bottle missing both, every time. Before paying more, ask what the extra money buys. If the honest answer is nicer packaging, keep your cash.
When food is the simpler answer
Plain yogurt with live active cultures, kefir, and sauerkraut support general digestion at a fraction of a supplement's cost[8]. They're not a substitute for a strain-specific product aimed at antibiotics or IBS, but for everyday support, food is a reasonable, low-risk starting point. Pick up a plain yogurt with live active cultures and eat a serving today. If you already have a probiotic bottle at home, flip it over and check two things: a real strain name past the genus, and a guarantee through expiration rather than manufacture. Missing either one is your cue to swap it.
