Traditional Chinese Medicine has long held that cold food and drink slow digestion and strain the body's ability to process a meal. A controlled study measuring actual gastric emptying rates gives that old idea some real, measurable backing.[1]

The study used radiolabeled orange juice in six healthy young adults, tracking how quickly the stomach released the liquid at different starting temperatures.[1] Both the cold and warm drinks returned to body temperature within 20 to 30 minutes of being swallowed. The slowdown is a real but temporary effect tied to that adjustment window, not a lasting digestive problem.

If you notice more sluggish digestion after a very cold drink or meal, the traditional belief has some real backing: research shows a measurable, if temporary, slowdown in how fast your stomach empties cold liquid. This effect resolves within about 20 to 30 minutes as the stomach contents warm to body temperature, so it isn't a reason to avoid cold food and drink altogether. If you have a sensitive stomach or notice cramping specifically after cold drinks, letting beverages sit for a few minutes before drinking is a reasonable, low-effort adjustment.
