Cutting rice isn't what the research points to. What tends to cause problems is rice eaten alongside a narrow, low-fiber selection of everything else, which gives gut bacteria very little besides the rice itself to work with. This pattern also holds up outside the Philippines, including among Filipino overseas workers whose diets and gut bacteria shift after long-distance migration.

If most of your meals already center on rice, focus on what sits beside it. Add a vegetable, legume, or fermented side like atchara or burong isda to at least one rice meal today, and keep rotating what you pair it with through the week.
