Turkey meatballs and sweet potato mash isn't the flashiest combo, but it earns its spot in the rotation. Ground turkey gives you lean protein without weighing down your gut, while the sweet potato brings a solid dose of fiber that your gut bacteria love to ferment. Garlic sneaks in some prebiotic backup too. This dinner quietly does its job without asking for a round of applause.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Mix turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  3. Form into meatballs and bake 20-22 minutes until cooked through.
  4. Meanwhile, boil sweet potato cubes until tender, about 15 minutes.
  5. Mash sweet potatoes with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  6. Serve meatballs over the mash.

Why This Is Good for Your Gut

Sweet potatoes are rich in soluble fiber that beneficial gut bacteria ferment into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which helps nourish the cells lining your colon. Garlic contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds Bifidobacteria. Lean turkey protein supports the amino acid pool your gut lining needs for repair without the heavier fat load of red meat.

Comfort food that's secretly doing your microbiome a favor. We'll allow it.
