This is an old Ayurvedic drink that modern research has actually caught up to and backed. Curcumin from turmeric is one of the most studied compounds in gut health research, ginger keeps things moving along nicely, and black pepper boosts how much curcumin your body absorbs by a huge margin. Seven minutes on the stove, sip it warm before bed, and you've got a nightly ritual with real substance behind it.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups coconut milk (or oat, almond, or dairy milk)
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger (or 1cm fresh ginger, grated)
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper (essential — activates curcumin)
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of cardamom (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add milk and all spices to a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat, whisking continuously, until hot but not boiling — about 4-5 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat. Whisk in honey or maple syrup and vanilla. Taste and adjust spice levels.
  3. Pour into mugs through a fine sieve if using fresh ginger. Dust with a pinch of cinnamon or turmeric before serving.

Why This Is Good for Your Gut

Curcumin has clinical research supporting its role in reducing gut inflammation and IBS symptoms. Black pepper increases curcumin bioavailability by up to 2000% — never omit it. Ginger reduces gut inflammation and supports motility. Cinnamon polyphenols are fermented by gut bacteria into beneficial compounds. Best consumed 30-60 minutes before bed.

Make this your wind-down ritual instead of that late-night scroll. Your gut (and your sleep) will thank you.
