Acacia fiber, also called gum arabic, shows up quietly in supplements and fiber powders, and it has one of the longer research histories of any prebiotic fiber, dating back roughly 5,000 years in traditional use and over 15 years in modern prebiotic research specifically.

What acacia fiber is

Acacia fiber comes from the dried sap of Acacia trees and is technically an arabinogalactan-protein complex, meaning it's built from sugar chains attached to a small amount of protein. Your digestive enzymes can't break it down, so it travels intact to your large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment it and produce short-chain fatty acids, the same route moringa's polysaccharides take.[1]

Why it ferments differently than most fibers

Research comparing acacia gum to other prebiotic fibers found it ferments more slowly and more distally, meaning further along in your colon than fibers like inulin.[2] The far end of your colon is where most chronic colonic conditions begin, so a fiber that keeps feeding beneficial bacteria in that specific region provides a different benefit than one that gets fully fermented earlier and leaves that region without fuel.

What repeated studies have found it does

A clinical study tracking the progressive fermentation of acacia gum found it consistently stimulated the growth of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, two bacterial groups widely used as markers of a healthy gut.[3] A separate lab model using human fecal bacteria confirmed acacia gum produces measurable short-chain fatty acids over a 24-hour fermentation window, tracking the process hour by hour.[4]

An honest complication to know

Not every study found a clear effect

A study testing acacia gum specifically in Kenyan infant gut bacteria during iron supplementation found it had no measurable effect, in contrast to inulin and a GOS/FOS combination, which both showed strong, consistent prebiotic activity in the same infant population.[5] This suggests acacia's prebiotic effect may depend on the existing gut bacteria population, and it isn't universally strong across every age group or starting gut composition.

What to do with this

Acacia fiber is generally well tolerated even at meaningful doses, which is part of why it shows up so often in fiber supplements aimed at people sensitive to more fermentable fibers like spirulina or barley beta-glucan. If you're adding it to your routine, start with a small amount and increase gradually, the same approach that applies to any new fiber source.
