Regular soda's link to poorer health has been documented for decades, and recent research has started explaining part of the mechanism: your gut bacteria are a real player in how sugary drinks translate into disease risk, not just a bystander.
The study that connected the dots

How much soda moves the needle
Research tracking sugar-sweetened beverage intake over four years found that increasing consumption by just half a glass, 110 milliliters, was linked to a 16 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the following four years compared to people whose intake stayed stable.[2] The average intake in the population studied was already 2.7 servings a week, so the added risk reflects incremental changes layered on top of common, everyday consumption rather than an extreme habit.
Does switching to diet soda solve this?
The honest answer is mixed.
