Two nutrition trends are competing for the same plate right now. Proteinmaxxing pushes protein intake well above standard recommendations, chasing muscle and satiety. Fibermaxxing does the same for fiber, chasing gut health and steady blood sugar. Framed as a rivalry, the question misses what each one is solving.
Most adults need roughly 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight just to avoid deficiency. Many researchers now favor 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram for active or older adults, since higher intakes appear to protect against age-related muscle loss better than the bare minimum does.[1] Most adults also need 25 to 38 grams of fiber a day, and current average intake sits closer to 15 grams, a bigger relative shortfall than most people run on protein.
The foods that resolve this tension exist already: beans, lentils, chickpeas, and edamame carry meaningful amounts of both protein and fiber in the same bite. A cup of cooked lentils supplies about 18 grams of protein and 16 grams of fiber. Chicken breast supplies protein and essentially no fiber; white rice supplies fiber's opposite problem. Building a plate mostly around single-nutrient foods is what forces the false choice in the first place.

What to do with this
Don't pick a side. Track one full day of eating and note which gap is bigger for you, protein or fiber. Most people are closer to their protein target than they think, and further from their fiber target than they'd guess. If you're already hitting 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight through meat, eggs, and dairy, your next real gain comes from fiber, not more protein. Swap one meat-based meal a week for a bean or lentil-based one and you'll move both numbers at once.
