Autoimmune diseases share a common thread: research now ties several of them, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, thyroid disease, and psoriasis, to changes in gut bacteria. A 2025 systematic review pooling ten studies across these six conditions found a consistent pattern, even though the diseases themselves look very different from each other. That last row is the most concrete number in the review: a 58% higher rate of clinical improvement among patients who received microbiota-directed treatment. The confidence interval was tight, with close to zero statistical inconsistency between the pooled trials.[1] The weaker link is causation. Fecal transplant experiments in mice show dysbiosis can directly trigger autoimmune-like symptoms, but human studies so far show association, not proof that gut changes cause the disease rather than result from it.
What to do with this
This research doesn't mean an autoimmune condition can be reversed through diet alone, and no single supplement or gut protocol has been shown to do that. What the pooled data does support is that diets favoring bacterial diversity, more plant fiber, more fermented foods, less ultra-processed food, are associated with a 58% higher rate of clinical improvement across the trials studied. If you have an autoimmune diagnosis, treat gut-supportive eating as a reasonable addition alongside prescribed treatment, and ask your specialist before starting any probiotic aimed at your specific condition.
