What happens to food between your mouth and the toilet

A bite of food takes somewhere between one and three days to complete its full trip through you, and the vast majority of that time isn't spent where most people would guess.

The full trip, stage by stage

~10 sec: Mouth & esophagusChewing and saliva begin breaking down starches immediately. Swallowing sends food down the esophagus in under ten seconds via peristalsis, wave-like muscle contractions, a process that also depends on whether you tend to breathe through your mouth or your nose.[1]
2-5 hrs: StomachAcid and enzymes churn food into a semi-liquid called chyme. Liquids pass through in 20 to 30 minutes; a large, fatty meal can take the full 5 hours.[2]
2-6 hrs: Small intestineWhere nearly all nutrient absorption happens. Bile and pancreatic enzymes finish breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.[3]
10-59 hrs: Large intestine (colon)By far the longest and most variable stage. Water gets reabsorbed, gut bacteria ferment whatever fiber wasn't broken down earlier, and waste gradually solidifies into stool.[4]
Variable: Rectum & exitStool is stored in the rectum until elimination. Total mouth-to-exit time for healthy adults typically runs 24 to 72 hours, with a median around 28 to 30 hours.[5]

Why the colon dominates the total time

Add up the fastest stages, mouth and esophagus in seconds, stomach in a few hours, small intestine in a few more hours, and you're only at roughly 6 to 8 hours. The colon alone can take longer than all the other stages combined, which is why total transit time varies so widely between individuals. Most of that variability lives in the slowest, least standardized stretch of the journey.

Fast end of normal range: ~24 hrs

What changes this timeline in either direction

Fiber intake speeds colonic transit by adding bulk that gut bacteria and muscles can move more efficiently. Dehydration, low physical activity, and certain medications, particularly opioids, slow it down. Biological sex plays a measurable role too. Women's whole-gut transit time runs meaningfully slower than men's on average, partly due to colon length and hormonal differences.[6]

What to do with this

A 24-hour and a 70-hour transit time can both be within normal range for different healthy people, so a single measurement isn't inherently a red flag. What's more useful is noticing a meaningful, sustained shift in your own typical pattern, since that shift is a more reliable signal that something, diet, hydration, stress, medication, has changed than comparing your number to someone else's.
