Straight out of the fridge, yogurt and fruit are cold enough to make your stomach do a little extra work before digestion even gets going. Letting both sit out for 20 minutes closes most of that gap, the same logic behind not skipping breakfast altogether.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 ripe peach, sliced (or 1/2 cup berries)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons toasted almonds, chopped

Instructions

  1. Take the yogurt and fruit out of the fridge and let them sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  2. Spoon the yogurt into a bowl.
  3. Arrange the sliced peach on top.
  4. Drizzle with honey and scatter the toasted almonds over the top.

Why This Is Good for Your Gut

The idea that cold food makes digestion work harder is more folk wisdom than a settled body of research, but what evidence exists points the same direction: one commonly cited explanation holds that "cold foods shock the digestive system and make your gut work overtime," while warmer foods pass through with less resistance.[1] This isn't a reason to avoid cold food entirely, just a low-effort swap worth trying if you notice a difference.

The fruit softens slightly as it warms, which actually makes it easier to eat with a spoon alongside the yogurt. Swap in whatever fruit is in season, or try Fig Compote with Greek Yogurt when figs are around.
