Bovine colostrum and your gut: what the research shows

Bovine colostrum, the first milk cows produce after calving, has moved from calf nutrition into a mainstream gut health supplement, and the research behind it is more substantial than most trending supplements get. The evidence also contains a genuine contradiction you should know about before you buy it.

What's in it

  • Immunoglobulins, primarily IgG, present at roughly 100 times the concentration found in regular milk, involved in binding and neutralizing pathogens in the gut
  • Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Growth factors, including IGF-1 and TGF-β, involved in stimulating repair and regeneration of intestinal cells
  • Oligosaccharides, complex sugars that appear to influence gut bacteria composition

These components together are the proposed mechanism behind colostrum's effects on gut lining: stimulating epithelial repair while modulating inflammation.[1]

Where the evidence is strong

A 2024 meta-analysis pooling ten randomized clinical trials found bovine colostrum measurably reduced intestinal permeability, measured by standard lactulose-to-rhamnose and lactulose-to-mannitol urine tests, across both healthy athletes and patients.[2] Separate trials have shown colostrum blunting the permeability increase that NSAIDs and heat-related exercise stress typically cause.[3]

The one study that found the opposite result. Thirty healthy men completed eight weeks of running training while taking 60 grams daily of bovine colostrum, whey protein, or a control. Intestinal permeability increased measurably more in the colostrum group than in either comparison group.[4] Most other trials tested colostrum's effect on a single, acute permeability spike, exercise, NSAIDs, illness. This trial tested weeks of sustained daily use during ongoing training, a meaningfully different exposure that produced a meaningfully different result.

What this contradiction suggests about how colostrum works

One proposed explanation involves a specific tight junction protein, claudin-2, which forms a pore naturally more "leaky" than other claudins. Research found colostrum increases claudin-2 expression in gut cells without necessarily impairing overall barrier function, suggesting the relationship between colostrum and permeability may be more nuanced than a simple tightening effect, and may depend on baseline gut condition, dose, and duration of use.[5]

Short-term tool, not a daily habit

Short-term, targeted use around acute stressors: a course of NSAIDs, an intense competition period, or acute illness

Less supported

Indefinite daily supplementation as a general "leaky gut fix," especially during sustained training

What to do with this

Given the one study showing an opposite effect during sustained training, and given that commercial colostrum products vary widely in immunoglobulin content, treating colostrum as a situational tool rather than a permanent daily habit fits the actual evidence more closely than the general "leaky gut fix" framing it's often sold with.
