Trials show they cut the risk of NSAID-related ulcers substantially when taken alongside the NSAID.[6] Starting one isn't something to do on your own, it's a conversation to have with a doctor who can weigh your specific risk factors. But it's a real, well-established answer, something more useful than just gritting your teeth and hoping for the best. Supporting the gut lining itself with adequate zinc is a reasonable complementary step alongside that conversation, not a substitute for it.
