Mucin and your gut lining

Before food ever reaches the actual cells of your intestine, it has to pass through a thick, slippery coating made mostly of one protein family called mucin. This layer sits right on top of the tight junctions covered elsewhere in this content. It does just as much protective work, maybe more, even though almost nobody outside a lab ever hears about it.

Your colon has two walls, not one

Picture a walled city with two rings of defense. This isn't an accident of biology. It's a deliberate setup that lets your gut bacteria live close enough to interact with your body without ever touching the cells underneath.[1]

Relaxed and busy, full of foot traffic and market stalls, and that's where trillions of your gut bacteria set up shop.

Packed so densely that almost nothing gets through uninvited, and that inner ring stays completely sterile.

What this mucus is made of

The main mucin in your gut goes by the name MUC2, and roughly 80 percent of it, by weight, is just sugar.[2] Picture a protein strand with sugar chains hanging off it, a bit like charms on a bracelet. Those sugar chains aren't just there for structure. Some of your gut bacteria have specifically evolved the tools to snip them off and eat them.

Normally your gut bacteria get most of their energy from the fiber you eat, not from your mucus layer. But picture a family whose usual food delivery stops showing up. They don't just go hungry, they start eating whatever else is in the house. Something similar happens on a low-fiber diet: certain bacteria switch strategy and start eating your protective mucus coating instead, thinning it out from the inside.[1] A thinner mucus layer means bacteria end up sitting closer to your actual gut cells than they should, and animal studies have linked this directly to increased inflammation.

Each step in this loop feeds the next one.[3] Take fiber out of the picture and it isn't just one part of the system that suffers. What to do with this

Most conversations about gut health jump straight to tight junctions or whatever supplement claims to fix "leaky gut," and skip mucus entirely. But mucin production depends on fiber and bacteria working together, and one study shows exactly how directly that connection runs. Researchers transplanted gut bacteria from a low-fiber donor into mice, and the bacteria alone weren't enough. The mice still couldn't produce adequate mucus.[4] But adding just 14 grams of fiber back into their diet restored the relationship between the bacteria and the mucus layer. Fourteen grams is roughly a cup and a half of cooked lentils, or a large apple eaten with the skin on, a small, realistic amount rather than a big overhaul. The reverse holds too. Cut fiber intake, even briefly, and certain gut bacteria switch strategy fast. They expand their numbers by feeding on your mucus layer instead of the fiber that's missing.[4] Even short low-fiber stretches trigger it, which is part of why consistency matters more than any single perfect meal. None of this calls for tracking grams or hitting a precise target. A cup of lentils, a bowl of monggo, or a couple of pieces of fruit spread across your day gets you most of the way there. Treat fiber as something you eat daily, not something you fix on your worst weeks, since your mucus layer rebuilds constantly and depends on a steady supply to keep up. Anyone taking NSAIDs regularly should pay extra attention here, since NSAIDs and your gut covers a separate way this same barrier gets stressed.
