Researchers didn't infer this from animal models or a petri dish. They measured it directly in human intestinal tissue, taken from real biopsies.[2] Most gut health claims get extrapolated from mice, so having this one confirmed in people is a meaningful step up in certainty.
The effect mattered even more, in a separate trial, for people who were already sick. In a clinical trial with Crohn's disease patients who were technically in remission but still had a "leaky" gut lining, eight weeks of oral zinc brought that leakiness back down to normal in most patients. Those patients also relapsed less often afterward, compared to the ones whose gut lining stayed leaky.[3] It works a bit like reinforcing a fence that has already started to sag. The sooner the repair materials show up, the less damage accumulates while you wait.
Zinc's other job: helping damaged tissue rebuild

Megadosing isn't the takeaway here. The upper safe limit sits at 40 milligrams a day from all sources combined, and going past that for a sustained period is what triggers copper deficiency, not the amounts naturally found in food. The clinical trial above used 26 milligrams twice daily, well above the standard target but still under that ceiling, and it ran under medical supervision for a specific condition, not something to replicate casually at home. The reasonable target is simpler: make sure zinc-rich foods show up on your plate a few times a week, and treat a multivitamin or standard-dose supplement as a backup, not a substitute, for actual food.
