Matcha and turmeric look like an odd pairing on paper, but whisked together over ice with milk, the matcha's grassy bitterness and the turmeric's earthy heat balance each other out. It's a gentler jolt than coffee and comes loaded with two of the most studied plant compounds around. See how they compare directly in Matcha vs. Green Tea vs. Black Tea: What's Different for Your Gut.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup

Why This Is Good for Your Gut

Matcha is rich in catechins, polyphenols shown to support a favorable balance of gut bacteria and reduce oxidative stress in the digestive tract. Turmeric's curcumin adds further anti-inflammatory support, and black pepper's piperine increases its absorption significantly. Together they offer a steadier form of alertness than coffee, without the acidity that can bother sensitive stomachs. For a caffeine-free version of the same golden-hued comfort, try our Chamomile Turmeric Golden Milk.

Whisk the matcha and turmeric paste first before adding milk. Mixing directly into cold milk leaves stubborn clumps. If you want a gingery variation instead, our Soothing Ginger Peach Tea uses the same whisk-first trick.
